Tissue Seal
About Tissue Seal
Tissue Seal was formed in 2002 by four individuals with a combined 120-plus years of experience in the medical device industry. The company began commercially distributing topical skin adhesives in the United States in March 2007. In 2021, H.B. Fuller acquired Tissue Seal, LLC, and its product portfolio of skin closure technologies.
Topical Skin Adhesives
Topical skin adhesives are medical glues used for wound closure. Most are octyl- or butyl-based cyanoacrylates. They can be used as a substitute for staples or stitches or in conjunction with staples or stitches as microbial defense and generally take less time and do not require anesthesia. Typically, there is less pain and lower risk of infection with topical skin adhesives, compared to staples or stitches.
Topical skin adhesives are ideal for:
- Simple cuts such as punctures from minimally invasive surgery
- Skin graft sites
- Simple trauma-induced lacerations
Normally butyls have a strong bond and quick drying time but are not very flexible, while octyls have a weaker bond and take more time to dry but are very flexible. Octyls also need an initiator to activate the curing of the adhesive. The polymerization, or curing, of the adhesive does not start until there is contact with tissue, blood, or fluid.
