Water-Based Barrier Coatings
Replace polyethylene (PE) coatings with water-based coatings to improve the recyclability of various paper-based household product packaging and food service packaging.
To enhance moisture resistance and grease resistance, paper-based packaging is frequently coated with polyethylene (PE). However, packages coated with PE may be challenging to recycle at a standard recycling facility. Often PE coatings may contaminate fibers during the repulping process, prohibiting the fiber from being recycled. H.B. Fuller water-based functional barrier coatings are a novel solution for improved recyclability of a wide range of paper-based packaging. Packages coated with our water-based barrier coatings achieve improved fiber yield compared to PE coatings during the repulping process. This results in the potential for higher volume of useable, high quality fibers to be added to the paper recycling stream.
Expert engineers at H.B. Fuller created these coatings to provide grease-resistant and moisture-resistant packaging and to meet direct food contact compliance with FDA 176.170 and Bfrxxxvi for NA and Europe direct food contact regulations.* They can withstand temperatures of up to 176°F and are heat-sealable to paper.
The H.B. Fuller water-based barrier coatings have been tested against the following test methods:
- TAPPI 441 Cobb Test for moisture resistance
- ASTM F1249 Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) (g/m2 per day)
- ASTM D918-99 for blocking resistance
